Contemporary Islamic rulings on abortion
All scholars, from the four Sunni and the Shiite colleges of believed, recognize that if the fourth month of gestation an abortion can’t be done until it is to truly save the mother’s life. Abortion before 4 months of gestation
Wanton, non‐therapeutic abortion

Beneficial abortion for medical causes associated with the healthiness of the baby
Some fatal congenital deformities might occur during embryonic development. Modern scholars haven’t usually allowed for an abortion for this reason. However, as we’ve noted above, one Ayatollah has allowed it in instances of “extreme difficulty&rdquo ;.Like, Ayatollah Makarim‐Shirazi29 mentioned, “It’s difficult to abort the baby (in instances of deformity), especially since you can’t be positively sure the deformities aren’t suitable for life.” Ayatollah Fazel‐Lankarani30 has allowed the baby to be aborted before 4 months of growth when it is dying from a maternal illness. Ayatollah Khamene’i31 initially didn’t approve of beneficial abortions centered on likelihood of deformity:
The likelihood of displaying a deformed baby doesn’t enable it to be aborted. However, in case a trustworthy physician attests that there surely is a concern that the life of the mother is at risk, the baby may be aborted before the nature is inhaled into it (i.e. four months gestation).
He’s, however, allowed the abortion of a deformed baby below limited circumstances. A questioner wrote, “Can it be permissible for a woman to abort a deformed baby when she requires particular support in offering it, particularly given that she had a similar experience with past pregnancies?” In response he wrote, “To their education essential, this type of technique, with the husband’s consent, is not forbidden, but you must avoid any impermissible activity that’ll be a consequence of starting the abortion.”32
Beneficial abortion following 4 months of gestation
As we’ve noted, abortion is prohibited following 4 months of gestation until the mother’s living is in danger. Ayatollah Fazel‐Lankarani33 says,
Aborting a baby is prohibited below any situations following the nature has been inhaled in to the baby, and before now it is prohibited until the mother’s living is in danger.
